Delivering the Fruit of RomancePublished: 21 Apr 2009 19:26:58 PSTAuthor: Dong JirongLychees, with their reddish spiky skin around a delicious, jelly-like pulp are much favored fruit around the world, and China is no different. They taste great but unfortunately get spoil really quickly. However, thanks to the modern transportation it’s not difficult to find cheap, ripe Lychees in Beijing, even though the northern capital is far away from the southern China where Lychees are grown.More than a thousand years ago, a woman who lived in Chang’an, today Xi’an, capital of Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, was also fond of Lychees. She was Yang Yuhuan, the favorite concubine of Emperor Tang Xuanzong (685-762) and one of the most beautiful and fashionable women in Chinese history.Due to slow modes of transportation, the Emperor set up a special courier service with teams of swift horses to deliver the fresh fruits hundreds of miles from south China to the Imperial court for his consort. It’s said that riders and horses were changed along the way and the fruit was rushed to the palace as quickly as possible before they were spoiled. When the Lychees arrived, the concubine was very happy would give a beautiful smile. A poem by Du Mu, a poet of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), exposed and satirized this palace extravagance. It reads: ”A horse gallops across the land at full speed, and the concubine laughs. Who else knows it is lychees coming.” Ever since then lychees have been considered in China the finest of delicacies and a symbol of romance. One type of lychee is even named “Smiling Concubines.”One might be amazed by the speed at which fresh lychees were carried to Chang’an. To understand it, it is worth learning more about the postal service in the Tang Dynasty. The national postal service was created in the first Chinese empire, under the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC), to enhance the imperial control throughout the huge country. About a thousand years later, the postal system was more developed and efficient in the Tang Dynasty. The central government employed thousands of postal workers of various ranks and responsibilities to provide service for post offices and larger postal stations. Major postal stations were placed every 30 li (one li in Tang times = 450 m) along every major road in the country. According to historical records, during the reign of Emperor Tang Xuanzong, 1,639 postal stations were established nationwide, of which 260 were marine stations, 1,297 were land stations, and 86 served both functions. The speed of postal service was legally regulated. Depending on the urgency of the post the speed of postal riders ranged from 180 li, 300 li, and even up to 500 li, about 225 kilometers, a day. This full-fledged postal system helped to connect the heart of the empire with every corner of the country.Knowing this, it’s not difficult to understand how the special lychee-delivery team was able to transport fresh lychees the many miles to Xian so efficiently.Yet, no matter how swift the postal service was, it would still take days to deliver the spoilable fruit from South China to the northern city of Xi’an. It’s said that measures had been taken to maintain its freshness before embarking on a long and tough journey. Some agree trees with would-be ripe lychees atop were transferred along the way and the fruits would be picked down when the destination was drawing near. Some others maintain lychees connected with branches and leaves were put in containers and sealed with wax to ensure freshness.Ordinary fruit they might be in China today, lychees were capable of being, without exaggeration, crowned “the National Fruit” more than a millennium ago as they happened to be the favorite of the First Lady. What’s more, the love story of Emperor Tang Xuanzong and Lady Yang also justifies the lychees oready to assemble kitchen cabinets 工作流 北京翻译公司 lithium batteries 风机箱 弹簧 in stock kitchen cabinets miniature bearings -

It is the second consecutive month that China has received the most shipbuilding orders, surpassing Japan and South Korea, the two largest shipbuilders in the world. China’s shipbuilding industry has taken a series of measures, including adopting a relatively relaxed loan policy, to rejuvenate the industry. Meanwhile, shipbuilding enterprises have closely cooperated with ship owners to expand market demand. In the first half of this year, China’s total export volume of the three main ship types amounted to US$9.13 billion, accounting for about 70% of China’s total ship export volume. The world’s shipbuilding industry received no global shipbuilding orders in May 2009, marking the lowest level in at least seven years. Due to overcapacity in the shipping market, China’s shipbuilding industry has faced order cancellations, ship delivery delays and severe financial strain. To combat these difficulties, China’s shipbuilding enterprises should focus on achieving high productivity, high efficiency, low cost and low energy consumption and change the risks into opportunities, said Yang Xinfa, deputy secretary of CANSI.Copyright © 2009 http://www.chinaknowledge.comRTA cabinets 门禁 china elevator lipo battery 超声波清洗机 弹簧 弹簧 实验室家具 -

Jinan Iron and Steel suffered decline in profit in 2008Published: 08 Mar 2009 23:00:00 PSTMar. 9, 2009 (China Knowledge) – Jinan Iron and Steel Co Ltd<600022>, a major domestic steel producer in East China’s Shandong Province, said it realized over RMB 780.6 million in net profit in 2008, 60.13% less than its profit one year earlier, the Shanghai Daily reported.According to the company’s 2008 annual report, the steel producer realized around RMB 43.18 billion in operating income, up 21.38% year on year. Earnings per share (EPS) were RMB 0.55. The company will issue a dividend of about RMB 0.5 per 10 shares (including tax) to all shareholders. The company attributed the profit decline to the sharp decrease in both domestic and overseas demand amid the global financial crisis. Moreover, the demand contraction caused the rising stockpiling and led steel prices to drop.In 2009, the company hopes to realize RMB 881 million in net profit and hopes to output 7.67 million tons of pig iron, 8.93 million tons of steel and 7.53 million tons of rolled steel. China’s fiscal revenue dives 17.1% in JanPublished: 17 Feb 2009 18:57:05 PSTFeb. 17, 2009 (China Knowledge) – China saw its fiscal revenue fall 17.1% year on year to RMB 613.16 billion (US$89.72 billion) in January, according to a statement issued by the Chinese Ministry of Finance on Monday. The revenue of local governments in January edged down 2.7% to RMB 316.68 billion over the previous year, while that of the central government experienced a sharper decline of 28.4% to RMB 296.48 billion from a year earlier, said the statement. The ministry attributed the dive mainly to the slowdown of economic growth, poor corporate performance and reduced channels for fiscal revenue. The government’s tax-cutting policies also contributed to the sharp decline. The Spring Festival holiday also affected the fiscal revenue in January due to the deduction of five working days, whereas in 2008, the holiday fell in February, the ministry added. Economic recovery pushes up domestic oil demandPublished: 15 Nov 2009 11:02:01 PSTBy Li Qiaoyi The International Energy Agency (IEA) raised its forecast for China’s oil demand as the economy, spurred on by the government’s stimulus packages, continues to bounce back. The IEA said the country’s oil demand is expected to increase by 5.7 percent over last year to average 8.3 million barrels per day (bpd), 400,000 bpd higher than its previous monthly forecast, according to its latest monthly oil market report released Thursday."Surging demand in China" has partly contributed to the revised higher forecast for global oil demand, the IEA said in the monthly report.Global oil demand is expected to rise in the fourth quarter for the first time since the second quarter of 2008. The IEA increased its forecast for global oil demand this year to 84.8 million bpd, 210,000 bpd higher than last month’s estimation, and raised its forecast for next year by 140,000 bpd to 86.2 million bpd.China released stronger-than-expected economic data last week. Industrial production in October showed the highest monthly increase since March, and urban fixed-asset investment in the first 10 months registered its biggest jump in 14 months, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The IEA’s forecast for China’s oil consumption next year was unchanged from the previous monthly report that forecast an average 8.6 million bpd.Refiners would see narrower profit margins if the fuel price is higher than $80 per barrel. If the price is above $130 per barrel, refiners would see zero profit margins and the government is likely to take measures such as freezing domestic fuel prices to ensure supplies, according to the current fuel price mechanism. In addition, the IEA believes that the rollback of favorable measures encouraging car consumption at year end is likely to weaken the growth of gasoline demand.Zhong Jian, chief analyst of oilgas.com.cn, believes however that even though the country’s oil prices are not in line with the global oil market, the government would issue new regulations if prices go too high. The total sales volume this year is contracting despite the recovery, said Zhong from oilgas.com.cn.The contraction is mainly due to declining diesel consumption because diesel used in large vehicles for transportation and manufacturing has dropped over the same period of last year, Zhong explained.
